Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Senior Airport Planner to join our team in Croydon to strengthen our Airport Masterplanning Services (AMS) team. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team, actively driving the delivery of airport planning related projects.

Mott MacDonald's aviation team offers a breadth of aviation-related knowledge and air transport skills, from aviation policy, air traffic forecasting and financial modelling to masterplanning, facilities planning, terminal design and airport engineering, including pavements and specialist systems. Our aviation team's deep understanding of the aviation industry from all air transport viewpoints enables us to ensure that aviation projects are delivered to the highest standard of quality.

The successful candidate will be working alongside as well as directing other planners to ensure successful delivery of projects. Primary responsibilities typically include but are not limited to:

  • Support the delivery of major airport planning related projects, and/or lead technical work packages related to the candidate’s field of expertise in airport planning.
  • Train, develop, and supervise more junior planners. This includes checking of their work to ensure a high quality output.
  • Project manage small or medium scale projects, responsible for the delivery and profitability of the project. This includes planning of resources and budgets as well as the day-to-day management and coordination of different sub-teams (if applicable).
  • Interface with the client or key project stakeholders, including presenting technical results, as well as being a key point of contact when acting as project manager.
  • Assist in the production and submission of proposals, including the organisation of the bidding process in line with typical internal procedures.
  • Assist business development activities in growing the airport planning sector.


The suitable candidate will have the following academic, professional qualifications and experience, competencies and skills:

Education and professional Membership

  • University degree in planning and/or engineering or equivalent in a transportation related discipline, e.g. Transport Planning, Airport Planning. Alternatively, a track record of proven significant working experience in the relevant airport planning related field.
  • Membership or chartership of a relevant professional body desirable (but not required).


One or more field(s) of specialised technical expertise within airport planning is required, such as airfield planning, airfield operations planning, terminal planning, airport landside planning, airspace planning etc.

  • Significant proven experience working in airport planning or related, including leading technical work packages (or smaller projects) related to the candidate’s field of expertise.
  • Track record of successful delivery of airport planning related projects, especially related to the candidate’s field of expertise.
  • Proven Management (project management and/or people management) experience, e.g. line management for more junior staff members, project management or similar.
  • A proven record of working in a team and using technical expertise to guide other professionals, including delegating work to more junior members of staff.
  • Proven ability to convey technical contents, project outcome and results internally or externally; to colleagues, clients or other stakeholders, in the form of reports or presentations.
  • Understanding of project contractual and commercial requirements.
  • Understanding of business development activities, and able to demonstrate successful role in bids/tenders.

Technical Skills

  • Excellent knowledge of the candidate’s field of expertise, and very good working knowledge of wider airport planning, terminal planning, surface access and airport masterplanning in general.
  • Capable of carrying out detailed technical work with no supervision, and capable of training others in the candidate’s field of expertise.
  • Computer literate, proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel (Power BI desirable).
  • Competent in the use of AutoCAD Civils 3D or similar design tool. Other 3D tools including Infraworks, Navisworks, Revit and/or other visualisation tools are desirable.
  • Good working knowledge of airport planning related simulation modelling tools relating to the client candidate’s field of expertise such as AirTOp (for airfield), CAST (for terminal), or similar, is desirable.
